Project: HDB Smart Home
Location: Kim Tian Road
Project Type: Smart Home Integration (Retrofit)
Overview
In dense urban environments like Singapore, HDB flats are designed for efficiency, that often comes with limitations in space, flexibility, and personalization.
We had the pleasure to work on another project with a pleasant homeowner living in Kim Tian Road. In our conversation with her , she is someone that enjoys personal time & wanted her home to be comfortable for her day to day enjoyments. To her, the home is not just a place to stay, but a space to recharge, unwind, and feel completely at ease.
After our discussions, it was clear the objective was to introduce smart home system that is effortless to use, aligns with her lifestyle & with the option to control via voice. The whole experience is to feel seamless & as tho "the home knows me".
The focus for our project implementation will to design the space that works seamlessly in the background enhancing comfort & simplifying routines.
The Task
Designing for this HDB unit a smart home that suits her lifestyle.
As someone who spends most of her time at home, the space needed to feel calm, personal, and easy to unwind in after a long day. Every smart solution was carefully integrated to complement the interior designer’s vision - enhancing the space without adding visual clutter.
At the same time, technology needed to fit naturally into her daily routine. No complicated controls, no need to figure things out, just a smooth, easy experience that works the way she expects.
Voice control became a key part of this, allowing her to interact with the home effortlessly. Systems needed to respond quickly and reliably, while automations were designed to feel intuitive rather than forced, reducing the need for manual interaction as much as possible.
Beyond functionality, the goal was to create a space that feels good to live in , where lighting, ambience, and ease of control come together to support a positive, uplifting environment every day.

The Solution
Instead of approaching this as a “device installation”, we designed a lifestyle system where automation supports behavior.

1. Layered Smart Lighting for Mood & Function
The lighting design plays a central role in shaping the home experience.
Cove lighting creates a soft ambient glow for relaxation
Downlights provide focused illumination when needed
Warm tones enhance comfort during evenings
All lighting is automated and voice-controlled, allowing seamless transitions between:
Work mode
Relax mode
Night mode
The space feels larger, calmer, and more adaptive throughout the day.

2. Voice-Controlled Ecosystem
The entire home is designed around hands-free interaction.
The homeowner can:
Turn lights on/off
Adjust brightness
Activate scenes
Control multiple zones at once
This eliminates the need to move around the house or rely on switches, especially valuable in a compact layout. A frictionless experience where technology fades into the background.

3. Smart Climate & Comfort Control
The system integrates:
Air-conditioning control
Ceiling fan automation
Scheduled routines
Smart Scenes:
Cooling activates before arrival
Fan adjusts based on time of day
Night settings optimize comfort for sleep
A home that adapts automatically without constant adjustments.
4. Clean, Minimal Integration
A key priority throughout the project was preserving a clean, refined interior aesthetic, ensuring that technology enhances the space without visually dominating it. Every element was carefully integrated - devices remain discreet and unobtrusive, wiring and hardware are concealed wherever possible, and controls are intentionally simplified to maintain a sense of clarity and ease.
The result is a home that feels thoughtfully designed and harmonious, where smart technology blends seamlessly into the environment rather than standing out more like a well-crafted living space than a tech showroom.
5. Personalized Automation Scenes
Rather than relying on generic, one-size-fits-all automation, every scene in the home was designed around her real daily habits.
Simple moments like coming home, winding down, or getting ready for bed are supported through intuitive scenes that happen effortlessly. A “Home” scene welcomes her back with lights and cooling activated instantly, while a “Relax” scene softens the space with dimmed lighting and a warmer ambience. At the end of the day, a “Sleep” scene gradually winds everything down, allowing the home to settle with her.
This project demonstrates how smart home technology can elevate everyday living without overwhelming the user.

Key Results:
✔️ Improved comfort and convenience through automation
✔️ Effortless control via voice-first interaction
✔️ Enhanced ambience with layered lighting design
✔️ Clutter-free environment with clean integration
✔️ Personalized living experience tailored to individual habits
Most importantly, the home now reflects the homeowner’s lifestyle: calm, independent, and intentionally designed.
Many assume smart homes are best suited for large properties, but this project proves otherwise.
Even within a compact HDB flat, smart living can:
Maximize space efficiency
Simplify daily routines
Enhance emotional wellbeing
Support independent living
It’s not about having more technology, but it’s about using the right technology in the right way.
At Onsmart Living, every smart solution starts with homeowner's lifestyle.
This smart home is a perfect example of how thoughtful design and smart technology can come together to create a space that feels effortless, personal, and future-ready.
